When it comes to model car collecting, 1:87 scale models aren’t typically the most popular running. They’re tinier than a Hot Wheels car, likely more expensive and definitely more delicate. Even still, their compact nature makes them great for managing a large collection in a small place.

To the uninitiated in scales, 1:87 is the same as that of HO Scale toy trains. That this segment is so rich in selection of models is likely at least partially attributable to toy train enthusiasts and their desires to build elaborate train dioramas. As a result, car enthusiasts could do the same with a rich market of buildings and other in-scale support products, or we’d suggest doing as we did by mounting a vintage letter press drawer picked up at an antique market, mounting it to a brick wall in our studio office and filling it with many of our favorite cars.

Many of the known model car manufacturers such as Schuco, Spark, Neo and Welly also make 1:87 scale offerings, but there are also specialists that dominate in the space. Chief amongst the latter are German manufacturers Herpa and Wiking. Below are ten of our favorites taken from new product announcements around the industry.

Porsche 911 S Coupe from Schuco
Longhoods are icons in the space, which explains why their prices are going through the roof. This clean simple S spec 911 features that same classic design with handsome dark blue and Fuchs alloy wheels. More Information: Schuco.de

Audi A5 Sportback in Brilliant Black by Herpa
New for the so-called B9-generation Audi A5, Audi of America will now be importing the 5-door Sportback version of the car. This body style has proven itself a briskly selling forbidden fruit in previous guise, and there’s plenty of anticipation of it’s arrival Stateside. Even before it gets here, it seems Herpa has it on offer in this smallest of scales. More Information: Herpa.de

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S “Concept Black” by Schuco
The “murdered out” trend continues with this triple black take on Mercedes-Benz’ latest highly endearing sportscar the AMG GT S coupe. More Information: Schuco.de

Land Rover Series I by Schuco
Speaking of icons, it’s hard not to find a human who wouldn’t recognize the boxy profile of a Land Rover Series I. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this model from Schuco, but here in blue makes a handsome addition to previous Landy offerings. More Information: Schuco.de

Volkswagen T1 Samba Pink Bus by Wiking
HO Scale is just a bit too tiny for a Barbie doll, but this pink Samba from Wiking seems geared for the girliest of girl dolls… complete with pink curtains and more. More Information: Wiking.de

Porsche 911 Turbo Matte Black by Herpa
The so-called type 991.2 generation Porsche 911 Turbo is Stuttgart’s latest and greatest version of its fabled sportscar… at least until the always broad 911 range really flourishes in its latest guise. For now though, Herpa has this latest Turbo available, here in menacing matte black. More Information: Herpa.de

Range Rover Honey Yellow by Wiking
No doubt the classic Series I Range Rovers are making their way back into the crosshairs of collectors. Most sought-after amongst these must certainly be the never-sold-in-america 2-doors versions, often in unmistakably period paint hues such as Honey Yellow shown here. More Information: Wiking.de

BMW M1 “BMW History Edition”
This BMW M1 is just one in a series of classic re-issuings from Herpa of historic Bimmers. The collection also includes the likes of the E30 M3, E46 M3 GTR, first-generation Z3 in James Bond-like blue and more. More Information: Herpa.de

Audi R8 V10 plus “24h Nurburgring” Safety Car
Neither a racecar or a road car, we’d still include this Audi R8 on our short list anyway. Audi’s mid-engine offering has always looked good as a safety car in series or races where the brand competes, and there are few races more memorable than the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. More Information: Herpa.de

Porsche 911 GT3 RS “Concept Black” by Schuco
Yes, we know we’re a little heavy on P-cars in this list, but that’s likely the result of simply so many great releases by the various manufacturers. It’s hard to not count a GT3 RS as significant in any list, particularly one that’s “murdered out” in matte black. More Information: Schuco.de
