We don’t want to sound pessimistic, but it seems there’s a potential downside to everything… including the awesome crowd-supported Lego design website Lego Ideas. One might ask what could be bad about a platform designed by Lego themselves to democratically let fans rally behind other fan built designs in order to make them a kit. Near as we can tell, the only downside, and in fact on that may apply to this beautifully detailed Porsche 917K, as it may not get enough votes.Lego Ideas Porsche 917K 1971 Project by @Greg998 on ideas.lego.com (photo: Lego Ideas)

The build itself is most impressive. The model’s creator @Greg998 on that platform has made a 1:8 scale representation in Legos. In this particular form, it’s the Martini Livery car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1971 with drivers Helmut Marko and Gils Van Lennep.

Obviously, the 917 itself is an icon. Introduced in 1971, the real car featured a magnesium tubular chassis that was light, fast and proved reliable in the grueling world of endurance racing. In 1971, the pair of drivers set a distance record at Le Mans that would stand for 39 years. The car also established itself in the fickle eye of pop culture when it also starred (painted in Gulf livery) in the major motion picture Le Mans.

This scaled down Lego version by @Greg998 features real steering, functional suspension, technic flat 12 engine, removable engine cover, and a modular design structure that makes building other variations of the 917.

That last part is no understatement. While some Lego Ideas concepts get one version, or 3D CAD design versions, this one is very much live and in the bricks. Its creator has also built another matching the red and white livery from another Porsche victory as well. And, yes, there’s also the mix of 3D CAD renderings just to give you further inspiration.

According to the Lego Ideas website, the design has some 1400 votes on its way to make its goal of 10,000 in order to then be judged by a panel of Lego product engineers. That’s a pretty impressive base, but it’s when you consider it’s got just 63 days left to achieve that goal that the Lego 917K’s plight gets more dire.

That’s where our plea comes in. Vote it up. For the love of all that is cool about Le Mans and Porsche, vote this thing into production.

VOTE FOR IT HERE.
