We’re big proponents of the Lego arts, particularly designs submitted to the brick toy manufacturer’s Lego Ideas website for official model kit consideration. Sure, anyone can put four wheels on a hodgepodge of bricks and call it a car, but it take special talent to create something truly notable. The internet is rife with such self-styled master builders, so when really cool car designs percolate up through the ranks then we sit up and take notice. Take for instance this Rothmans livery Porsche 959 Paris-to-Dakar build found today over on Lego Ideas.

The design is by Lego Ideas user PeterVercoelen. It captures the Porsche 959 rally car campaigned by Stuttgart in the 1986 Paris to Dakar race in what appears to be a Lego Technic style build. Scale is 1:8, so dimensions of 54 cm long, 23 cm wide and 19 cm tall.

Details include a “fake” flat-six boxer engine, likely meaning it’s not of the super nerdy operational Lego engine model variety. It’s also got a 6-speed gearbox, 4-wheel drive, operational steering, remote controlled adjustable height suspension, remote controlled working lights front and rear, throttle cable, working rear brakes and working clutch.

As of this writing, the project has earned 192 votes and has 328 days left for voting. He’ll need about 10,000 to be considered by Lego’s product committee, so we’d suggest you get on over there and vote for it and then tell your friends so they do too.

Is it worth voting? Well, last fall we ran a story on a Mk1 Volkswagen Golf that ended up getting amplified into the mainstream car blogs. That car is now confirmed for production… so yes, it could happen. Vote here! Also check out more photos below.
