If you’re a car enthusiast who went to amusement parks with your kid, then it’s probably happened to you. Likely you made your way past roller coasters or merry go rounds and straight for the driving ride. While bumping each other or racing was at best frowned upon and more likely not even possible, getting to drive one of those amusement park go karts was a joy. Perhaps you even fantasized about breaking free from the steel ridge guided track and driving off into the sunset. Now you can.

What you see here is an obscure bit of amusement park history found for sale on the New York region of Craigslist. It’s an original Arrow badged go kart used at Six Flags in the 1960s. The car was part of their Route 66 Tour ride during that era. It’s powered by a Kohler 5hp gas engine.

The current owner of this car bought it and went through a bit of a restoration process. He stripped and refinished the fiberglass body, and he also recovered the black vinyl seats. In addition, he refitted a 12hp engine from Harbor Freight, added an electric fuel pump and switch, choke and added a brake pedal since the original configuration had an external brake lever for park ride attendees. He also made the headlights, brake and taillights functional.

That this is a commercial grade go kart for 1960s amusement park use tells you what you may have already guessed. The go kart is both big and heavy. The owner suggest’s it’s about 10 feet long, 5 feet wide and 2 feet high. He also thinks it weighs about 700 pounds thanks to solid steel and wood construction. He even suspects the rear is a cut down Dodge 5-lug configuration.

The design itself is interesting. We see a little bit of Corvette, a little bit of Ferrari, and maybe a dash of Karmann Ghia in the thing. No doubt it’d be a fun to share with your kids, though at $2700 it’s probably for the more serious kids at heart.
