Flawlessly clean isn’t exactly how we think of rally cars. The compact hot hatches of WRC by far look better with their battle earned grime and mud than they do polished up as they might be on an auto show stand. That’s also apparently the though of SandlundArt, who’s gone ahead and recreated the post race grime of this 2014 spec Volkswagen Polo WRC as it likely looked when it completed that season’s Monte Carlo Rally.

A few weeks back, we featured SandlundArt for the first time. While that work was also a Volkswagen hatchback, it was decidedly different in appearance. Then, it was a Golf Mk1 with decades of patina artfully simulated. This time around, its kilometers of hard rallying on what would otherwise be a modern car. Given the profound popularity of the Golf post, we wanted to show even more of his work and decided to focus on something slightly different from patina and age.

According to a post by SandlundArt on Facebook, the car you see here is based on a 1:43 scale version manufactured by Spark. The cars have been lovingly muddied, the returned to their boxes and include a certificate of authenticity from SandlundArt. As of the writing of that post, five examples were available for sale at 105 Euros plus shipping.

If you’re a rally nutter, we suspect you’ll want to take note. Even if the Polo WRC isn’t really your thing, we suspect one could commission a weathered rally car of any sort given what appears to be his tailored one-off work that tends to lead his portfolio.

Just out of curiosity, we were wondering how the cars compare to the real thing. We paid a visit to Volkswagen Motorsport’s photographic archives and dug out a few shots of Latvala’s Polo WRC as it contested the various stages of the Monte Carlo Rally. As you can see, the net effect is very close to the real thing.
