Description
The 1970 season may very well have been Trans Am’s high water mark. There were big budget, factory-supported teams from all the major manufacturers, and a star-studded list of drivers, including Parnelli Jones, George Follmer, Jim Hall, Vic Elford, Mark Donohue, Peter Revson, Sam Posey, Dan Gurney, Swede Savage and Jerry Titus.
The season was dominated by Bud Moore’s Mustangs and Roger Penske’s Javelins, with the championship going to Jones’ and Follmer’s Mustangs. The 1970 Trans Am season is best summed up by Jones’ drive in the season finale at Riverside, where he charged from ninth to first (and a win) after getting bumped off the track by a slower car and suffering extensive damage. The car was difficult to steer post-accident, so Jones bounced the car off the curbing to get the car up on two wheels through turns.
